It is the first in the series to feature a graphical user interface and to require a ROM cartridge. Contents Gameplay The game is a single-player board game. The object is to capture the opponent's king and place it in the castle. Three players (computer or human) can play against each other. One can choose the board, location of the starting positions, and all other game rules. There are two playing modes: the Computer mode and the Expert mode. In the Computer mode, the player controls the computer. The game begins with both players' pieces on the start squares. The Computer mode in the game is the same as that of the original Chessmaster. In the Expert mode, the player controls the computer while the opponent plays the game. The game is played with two kinds of pieces: pawns, rooks, knights and bishops, and king, queen, castle, and king's army. There are eight starting squares. After a player moves his or her pieces, the game moves according to the game rules. When a player's king is captured, the game is over. A player wins when his or her king and the opponent's king are in checkmate or in the same row, column or diagonal (see Chess). In the Computer mode, the Computer will take six moves (three for each player) to make a single move. The length of the time for a move can be set from 30 seconds to 1 hour (default). In the Expert mode, the players and the Computer are able to issue orders to the pieces at any time. The Computer is not required to respond immediately to the players' commands. The game is played in a three-dimensional chess board (a regular octagon). The board and pieces are all rendered in three-dimensional graphics. In this game, the board is referred to as the board while the pieces are referred to as the pieces. Pawns The king is the most important piece. Pawns are the smallest pieces and have the least attack power. In the game, the pieces have move order: pawns can move in any direction, rooks can move horizontally or vertically, knights can move horizontally or vertically, and bishops can move diagonally.
